Mississippi

We had no expectations, no opinions, and no knowledge about Mississippi when we first moved there in May 2016. It was probably the last place in the world I ever thought I would live, but that is where we ended up and that is where we were meant to be! The first thing I noticed about Biloxi was the white sand beach and the palm trees all along the main highway. And when we drove to our house for the first time I couldn't believe how many trees there were and how green it was! Everything grows and thrives there, and I've never seen so much rain (even in England!). We loved going to the beach and going swimming and enjoying the beautiful views. It was the perfect size town - big enough to have all the stores and activities we needed, but small enough to rarely have bad traffic or huge crowds.

It was a new experience living in the deep South and we loved it. Everyone was so friendly and welcoming and warm. The home-cooked food was delicious and I even grew to appreciate fresh seafood (at least some of it!). We made friends with our neighbors and long-time locals and other military families and are so grateful for all the people who are now a part of our story. We were loved and served and supported through two of the busiest and hardest years of our lives. But at any moment, I knew that I had 20 people I could call on for help and they would be there for us. We loved having people in our home for dinner and piano lessons and game nights. We loved our regular walks through the neighborhood and how safe and welcome we felt there.

Joseph worked 70+ hours a week in his residency program, and was busy, busy, busy. He learned so much and did so well and loved the people that he worked with. It was such a positive experience for him, even though it was such hard work. Matthew and Anna grew into big kids in Biloxi, and each had hardships and challenges that they learned to manage and overcome and turn into positive memories. They made some good friends and adjusted to the big school and learned how to say "Yes, Sir" and "No, Maam" when responding to adults. I was able to teach piano lessons to lots of little friends and our home was blessed by their presence.

When I was diagnosed with breast cancer last August, we quickly recognized that we were not in Biloxi by chance, and were exactly where we needed to be to make it through this trial. We feel that specific people were there just for us and were instrumental getting things taken care of so quickly. Joseph's work was extremely understanding and he was able to be with me when I needed him. Our ward friends offered dinners and babysitting and so much support. It was hard to be so far away from family, but we were well taken care of.

There was a point where I thought I would be happy to leave the Mississippi years behind us and start fresh. But then I realized that I could never and would never want to forget our experiences, the people we knew, and the things we learned there. I will always hold a very special place in my heart for Mississippi and our season there. I am so grateful for the beauty we saw and love we felt and knowledge we gained.

We will miss the gorgeous winter weather, the beach trips, the beautiful southern architecture, our big yard, the flowering azalea bushes, and wonderful people. We will not miss the summer humidity, the hurricane threats, and recess only once a week. We are excited to move to Las Vegas and be closer to family and hopefully stay put for a few years! We can't wait to see what is in store for us there.

June

I started June with a quick trip to Utah for my dear Grandpa Openshaw's funeral. It was a special day to celebrate his life and family and I am so glad I could be there!

We took a final trip to New Orleans to hang out with good friends and walk around the city. It has been fun to live close to this cool city!

Anna had a minor surgery to remove a cyst on her nose, and Matthew kept busy with swim team practice every day. We had lots of things to take care of while preparing for our move, and lots of fun things we tried to fit in before we leave Mississippi!

Matthew got to go on an airplane ride in our friend's plane. He loved flying over our neighborhood and getting to fly it for a little bit!

Visits from friends and baseball games, can't get much better than that!

Joseph officially completed the dental residency and we had a fun resident dinner to celebrate. It was such a wonderful, intense, and busy two years! We are so excited for a bit more family time, a fun road-trip family vacation, and a new start in Las Vegas!

May

We started the month with a birthday for this fun 11 year old, and a camping trip with lots of friends! We got to kayak, go fishing, eat lots of hot dogs and smores, and play and play!

I had a final reconstruction surgery at the beginning of the month, and am now completely done with all my treatment. It feels so good to feel more like my old self and to have time and energy for all our family activities. We have lots of things coming up this summer, so I am so grateful to be back in good health!!

School wrapped up and Matthew and Anna both got awarded for being on the Honor Roll all year.  They did great this year and are getting ready to start at yet another new school in the fall!

Joseph also had his graduation ceremony for completing the 2-year AEGD comprehensive dentistry residency and masters program. It was wonderful to celebrate this achievement and recognize how hard these guys worked! Just a few more weeks of patient care and final presentations and he is done!!

Joseph and I snuck away for a quick trip to Las Vegas to go house hunting. We looked at 12 houses in one day and found a great one for our family! We are so excited to buy our first house and settle down for a little bit! It was a busy month full of lots of wonderful things!

April

April was pretty great. I was looking forward to having a relaxing month and getting some energy back and enjoying life for a bit. The weather has been gorgeous and we've tried to spend as much time outside as we can!

The kids had spring break at the beginning of the month, and we loved spending time with friends and having fun activities to do each day. But my kids are too much like me - a cozy day at home is just about our favorite thing!

I finished up teaching piano lessons and had a final Spring recital at the end of the month. It has been a great experience to teach all these kids and I'm so proud of them!

April was a nice respite from our busy lives, and now we are ready for a busy next couple of months!

March

March was a big month for us - lots of things happened! First of all, we found out that we will be moving to Las Vegas, Nevada, for Joseph's next assignment! We are so excited to be moving closer to family! We will miss Biloxi and are looking forward to enjoying our last 3 months here.

Matthew didn't feel well for a couple of days, and when Joseph took him to the ER one night we found out he had appendicitis! He was so brave and everything went smoothly and we are grateful for all the blessings we received over those couple of days. He is all healed and feeling good as new, now!

Joseph took his boards exam and then had a research conference in Florida. My mom and dad came to visit for a week while Joseph was gone. We had lots of fun with them and are happy they got to enjoy our beautiful spring weather!

And I finished chemo at the end of March!! It was a long five months, but we received so much help and I handled it pretty well. We are so excited for this chapter to be done, and so thankful for the friends and family that celebrated with us!
