Venice, Italy

After our few days in Rome, we took the train about three hours north to Venice. It was a beautiful ride, through lovely countryside, fields, and villages. It was so exciting to see the train approaching Venice!

I loved it from the moment we got off the train. The whole city is just made up of sidewalks and waterways, no cars or motor vehicles at all. We walked to our hotel and dropped off our luggage, and then headed out to explore.

We took a ride on the vaporetto (ferry) from one side of the island to the other, and had some beautiful views. We couldn't bring ourselves to pay over $100 for a short gondola ride, so we just admired them from a far.


We walked around San Marco square, looked at all the fancy masks in all the shop windows, and let Matthew lead the way through the maze of streets. There is no way you won't get lost in Venice - the streets are so confusing - so we just embraced it and took the very long way back to our hotel. :)

The next morning we went out walking again, and found a nice farmers market and some yummy calzones for lunch. It was nice to not have a set schedule of what we were going to do in Venice, we just stopped when we saw something that interested us. The kids loved "The Land of Water" and were such good walkers (except for when Matthew got a blister from his sandals and Joseph had to carry him for a long walk back to the hotel).

We were so pleased with our 24 hours in Venice! It was a lovely place, and I could walk around those cute streets forever. We lucked out with perfect weather and I will have such fond memories of Venice forever!
